Why is vitamin D important?

Vitamin D is needed for normal growth and maintenance of bones. As a fat-soluble vitamin that only occurs naturally in a few foods, vitamin D also supports the normal function of the immune system, the nervous system and normal muscle function.

The skin doesn’t often produce enough vitamin D to meet daily needs, and in fact, vitamin D deficiency is a major health problem worldwide across all age groups5. The most common cause is lack of exposure to sunlight due to an indoor lifestyle, as well as cosmetics with UV filters, which reduce the skin’s ability to synthesise vitamin D.

Vitamin D is especially recommended in autumn and winter, as well as for those who have insufficient exposure to the sun, are permanently staying or working indoors, who have darker skin and/or who use cosmetics with UV filters.
